If you’re considering Menorca as your next summer destination, I’ve got great news for you: YOU WILL LOVE IT. Menorca is often referred to as “Mallorca’s little sister” and for a good reason, as the islands are similar in many aspects. But because Mallorca has such a big reputation (specially in the UK), Menorca often gets overlooked. This however, seems to be coming to an end, as more people choose Menorca every year (and for good reasons). So if you’re going to Menorca and want to know the best things to do in the island, you’ve come to the right place.
You may also want to watch a video of our most recent visit to Menorca. Here we cover: The best things to do, places to stay at, foods to try, and more ⬇️
1 – Go to a beach
It is no secret that Menorca has some of the best beaches of Europe – perhaps even the world. The typical white sand / clear blue Mediterranean water combination is stunning and can be found all across the island. We made a video about the Top 10 beaches in Menorca, and you can watch it here if you’re not sure where to start. If you’re going to a beach between July and August, make sure you arrive early in the morning. Beaches get packed, and so do parking lots, so finding a space can be challenging if you arrive at 11am.
2 – Watch the sunset from Monte Toro
Monte Toro is the highest point in the whole island of Menorca. From there you can see coastal towns such as Fornells, Arenal D’Encastel, and on a clear day, you can even see Mallorca on the distance. But the main reason why many people go up, is to see the sunset. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and we 100% recommend you to go one of the days if the sky is clear. Side note: you can climb on foot on the side of the road, but it will take you ages. We recommend you to just drive – despite being narrow the streets are good.
3 – Es Mercadal, and try an ensaimada
Es Mercadal is the closest town to Monte Toro, and the only place where you can access it from. But the town in itself is lovely to walk around. The main attraction for us is to eat Ensaimadas – a traditional Menorcan sweet that is produced right there. You can also do some local shopping like buying local cheeses or even Abarcas!
4 – Cova d’En Xoroi
This is by far the most popular “going out” spot in the island, and I get why. It’s a bar/club literally in a cave, on the side of a cliff, with direct views to the sea. To top it all off, it’s on the side of the island where the sun sets, so imagine… how busy it gets every day. We’ve been there several times in the last few years but only got in once, as the queues outside were way too long at sunset time, and not everyone can make it in on time.
Also, they do charge you €25 on entry – and they often gift you a drink (depending on the day). We 100% recommend you to go at least once, you won’t regret it!
5 – Have an Ice Cream in SA Gelataria
This may sound like an “everyday summer activity” but we promise it’s worth it! Sa Gelataria is a famous ice cream shop in Menorca who produce their own ice creams and they are nothing short of delicious! You will be able to easily spot the shop as it is normally always full. You can find it in Ciutadella, Mahon and Fornells.
6 – Walk Cami de Cavalls
If you are a bit of a hiker, adventure-seeker, or just enjoy nature, put on your shoes and get yourself to Cala Galdana. From here, you can embark on a walk, which is not particularly difficult, but it is across some rocks and raw nature. You will walk along the sea, next to some incredible views, and be able to discover beaches which are not easily accessible by car.
This include Cala Mitjana, Mitjaneta, Macarella and Macarelleta (depending on which side you trek towards). It’s worth noting that Cami de Cavalls is a path that goes all across the island. However, this section is our favourite because it allows you to walk short distances (about 5km) and get to some of the most beautiful beaches in the island.
We made a video about our walk in cami de cavalls which you can watch here.
7 – Visit Mahon and/or Ciutadella
These are the two main cities in Menorca, and chances are, you will be closer to one than the other. For that reason we recommend you to visit the closest city to you, but if you have time, both are worth spending some time in. Mahon and Ciutadella are similar in terms of views across the Port, restaurants by the bay and even size. But for shopping, food or an afternoon/night walk, we recommend you to spend some time in at least one of these. You will see loads of tourists around and the food options are excellent. We made a video comparing both of the cities – Watch it and let us know what you think!
8 – Visit Binibeca
Binibeca is a magical town in the south of Menorca which you 100% need to visit if you get some time. Most people refer to it as a spanish Santorini and I get why. The buildings are traditional and all white, and there are not cars in the center of the town, so you can walk around and find a restaurant to sit at and eat. If you like snorkelling, there are also some spots around the town where you ca park and get in the water to swin the ithe fishes! Side note: You need a car to get to Binibeca.
9 – Eat a Paella
We know we know 😂 Despite this not being a Menorca specific activity, eating a Paella in an island just hits different. The seafood is fresh and all the flavours hit you at once. Make sure to find yourself a nice retaurant (there are loads in Mahon and Ciutadella) that give you that authentic spanish local vibe. Paella’s normally require a minimum of 2 people ordering them as they are made in a huge pan, and our recommendation is the Paella Mixta. Go ahead, indulge yourself and thank us later.
10 – Get on a Boat!
It is undeniable that the sea in Menorca just looks stunning! With some many lihght shades of blue, you will want to rent a boat, get out there and jump in the water. You can rent a boat in group tours or individually, and they take you to multiple spots based on where you are. These spots are know as “Calas” and they are normally near the coast where there are little to no waver and ideal to swim. The water are so transparent in comparison to beaches because there’s almost no people and therefore, no pollution.
We could go on and on about all the things you should see in Menorca, but we have wrote a bunch of Blogs and made a whole bunch of videos give we go there every summer. So drop by our Youtube Channel to see our playlist and start getting ready for your trip!
