The capital of the Republic of Ireland is an easy city to get around walking. If you have limited time to see Dublin, are travelling on a tight budget or simply you want to get to know the city walking – keep reading!
During my 40Hour-visit to Dublin I managed to see most of the city by foot and without paying for anything that wasn’t edible.. Here is how we walked Dublin in one day:
O’Connell Street
If you are staying north of the river, start your day walking down O’Connell Street towards the south of the river. This street will give you a great initial taste of the city while you walk past some cultural spots such as the Spire and the Parnell Monument. Eventually, you will reach the riverside for the first time and you will cross the bridge towards south-side Dublin, the old town.
Trinity College
The very famous university and one of the most visited places in Dublin. Unfortunately, you have to pay to see the inside of the beautiful halls of its buildings but you can walk into the main square and see it from the outside for free!
St Stephen’s Park
Walk into this park to see the daily life of Dublin, where students and workers go to have lunch and families go for their weekend walks to feed the ducks with the kids. Could be compared to the (much smaller) central park of Dublin.
Dublin Castle
This cultural attraction will take you through the history of the city of Dublin, but it is also worth seeing from the outside if you don’t want to pay. The building is painted with interesting bright colours and the well-maintained park outside is lovely for a mid-morning stop!
Christ Church Cathedral
Next, visit the main Cathedral in Dublin at least from the outside. You have to pay to see the inside but you can step in and have a little sneak peak from the ticket desk.
Guinness Storehouse
Also in the top 2 attractions of the city is placed this factory. It offers an experience that takes you through Ireland’s most famous beer history, including tastings and a rooftop bar. But we only saw it from the outside to take a picture!
Riverside walk
Walk back into the centre of town following the riverside to enjoy the different city views.
Ha’penny Bridge
On the way, you’ll see this cute famous bridge built in 1816 made of cast iron. Don’t forget to walk over it for a unique view of the river!
Samuel Becket Bridget
Head to the modern side of town to contemplate the sunset from this side as the sky colours are beautiful when the clouds allow it.
The Temple Bar
To end the day, make sure to visit the most famous Dublin pub – Temple bar. The surrounding streets are also full of cute pubs and the atmosphere is lively to go for an end-of-day drink!
This itinerary of course excludes further away touristic attractions such as Phoenix Park. If you have more time and money than we did you should definitely check out the rest of the places that we missed!
