For most people, 2 weeks is the ideal amount of time to travel to Thailand, so if you’re planning your trip and have about 14 days, this blog is for you. The “Bagpacker’s paradise”, as Thailand is know, is HUGE – and there is SO much to do. We can easily create a month-long itinerary, but 2 weeks is enough to give you the essence of the country, so we will share with the PERFECT 14-day itinerary to travel Thailand. And if you prefer to watch a video of the locations and more in-depth explanations, you can watch our video below:
Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok
Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and it has the largest international airport in the country, so you’ll most likely be landing here. The airport is about 1 hour car-ride away from the center of the city, but with traffic it can take you a little more. There is a queue of taxis right at the exit of the airport, which you can grab to take you to your hotel. The fare should be around $30 (USD).
Days 2 and 3: Explore Bangkok
There is A LOT to see in the capital of Thailand. Bangkok is not just a stopover spot, it’s a city full of temples, markets, cahotic party streets and amazing food. You could easily spend a week in Bangkok, but for the purpose of fitting this trip in 2 weeks, we recommend you spend 2 full days in the city. On days 2 and 3, you will explore The Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Khao San Road (the biggest party street in BKK), Lumphini Park, and more! We made a list of TOP 10 things to do in Bangkok which you can watch in our Youtube Channel.
Day 4: Travel to Chiang Mai
On Day 4 we recommend you to take a flight to Chiang Mai in the northern forrests of Thailand. The flight should cost you between $30 and $70 depending on the time of the day, and day of the week, and take about 1H and 20 minutes. If you go right in the morning, you will have time to check into your hotel, and get out to explore the local temples, get some food and purchase a tour for the day after.
Days 5 and 6: Explore Chiang Mai
On days 5 and 6 we recommend you to explore the surroundings of Chiang Mai. During the day, you can do half-day or full-day tours, depending on your preferences. There are some to take you to an elephant sanctuary, others that take you to see local villages, viewpoints and waterfalls. There are even water activities and cooking classes – so options for all tastes.
Day 7: Travel to Phuket
After seeing the mountains of Thailand, it is now time to fly over to the south and land in Phuket. The direct flight takes about 2 hours and should cost about $100-$200 per person, dependng on the day and time you travel. Once you land in Phuket’s airport, you will want to take a transfer to Patong, which is about 1 hour away from the airport (assuming there’s not much traffic). We recommend you to take a taxi from the airport and not a shuttle transfer, as despite being a little cheaper, it’s normally always late.
Days 8 and 9: Explore Phuket
If you stay in Patong, there is so much to do! There are multiple night markets with great food and super cheap! There are also restaurants by the beach which are affordable and have great local food options. Patong beach is a great place to watch the sunset and you can also do a bunch of activities from there. like renting a jet ski for example.
Patong also has a party street with some of the best entertainment of Thailand. There are bars, clubs, restaurants, shops and everything in-between. You will not want to miss out on exploting it (specially at night!).
There are also some amazing tours you can do from Phuket, such as seeing the Big Buddha at the top of the mountain with incredible views to Phuket. You can also rent a tuk tuk (or a bike) and go to a far away beautiful beach for example – the opportunities are limitless.
Day 10: Take a ferry to Koh Phi Phi
On Day 10 you will take a Ferry in the morning from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi. It should take about 1 hour 30 mins. but if the sea conditions are not great or some people are late, it can take well over 2 hours. Early in 2024, the Ferry ticket cost us 700 THB per person, which is about $20 per person.
Once you land in Koh Phi Phi, we recommend you to walk around the island, purchase your tickets for the Maya Bay Tour the day after, and climb over to the summit of the island before sunset. It costs you about TBH 100 per person to enter the area, but the views are breathtaking as you can see both sides of the water almost touching – pictured below:
Day 11: Do the Maya Bay Tour
On Day 11 you will do the Maya Bay Tour (we recommend the half day tour), which departs early in the morning and lasts about 5 hours or so. Prices can vary and are negotiable, but we paid TBH 400 per person (about $12), and that included exploring some sites, including Maya Bay, and we got to swin in some of the “BLUEST” waters we’ve ever seen. Despite Maya Bay being overcrowded, we still think it’s worth doing this tour.
After you return from the tour, relax back in the island, get your ferry tickets to Krabi for the day after, and watch the sunset from the beach.
Day 12: Take a Ferry to Krabi
The ferry tickets to Krabi should cost you about TBH 450 per person ($13-$14) and the journey should take you a little over 1 hour. You will want to stay in Ao Nang – which is the area where most hotels, restaurants and shops are. Walk around the town, grab some food, explore the local markets and enjoy the seaside views Ao Nang gives you.
Day 13: Explore Railay Beach
From Ao Nang, you can take a local boat that takes you to Railay Beach in less than 20 minutes. Railay Beach is the most famous beach in Krabi, as you can only get there by boat. There are some great treks you can do once you get there, but take the time to enjoy the relaxing beach, as this will be your last full day of your 14-day holiday to Thailand.
Day 14: Travel back to BKK and back home
The last day of your trip has come. It’s now time to take a flight back from Krabi to Bangkok and your international flight back home from Bangkok’s airport. You will hopefully take with you incredible memories and LOTS of amazing pictures. If you have more time in Thailand, don’t forget to check out our Blog about the Best Places to Visit in the country!
