If you’re traveling to Southern Italy, Pompeii is one of those MUST VIST places. Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s the best maintained “town” from over 2000 years ago. Perhaps it’s the charm of the history behind how a volcano explosion decimated the whole town. Or maybe it’s the the gorgeous views to Mount Vesuvius. Whatever makes you want to visit, we can tell you – it’ll be worth it.
But very quickly, what’s the whole fuss about Pompeii?
Well, at some point, Pompeii housed close to 20,000 people and it had impressive public buildings, luxurious villas, bustling markets, and thriving industries, including wine production and fish sauce (garum) manufacturing. All of this over 2000 YEARS AGO. It also had huge amphitheaters as well as several spots created for entertainment and socializing.
On August 24, 79 AD though, everything changed. Mount Vesuvius, the nearby volcano, erupted violently, sending a massive column of ash and volcanic gases into the sky. The debris basically buried Pompeii and several other nearby towns, killing everyone who lived there instantly.
Because the town was buried for almost 2000 Years, its condition remained almost untouched. The condition of the buildings and the town is quite and as tourists, we can not only see what it looked like, but also learn about how Romans in Pompeii used to live back then.

It costs €22 per person for a 1-Day pass to see Pompeii. And that includes access to the ancient city as well as the Suburban Villas. If you want to do a Tour with a Guide (something I personally think may be worth it), it will cost you more, but that depends on the size of the group you do a tour with. Naturally, doing an individual tour will be more expensive. You can find the prices here.
What about transport prices? They can vary based on season and time of the day, but generally, from either Naples or Sorrento, a one-way train ticket costs between €3-€5 while the bus can range between €3-€7.
Is it worth visiting?
In our humble opinion, YES! It can all feel a little overwhelming when you’re there. The site is huge, and without understanding the basics, it may be hard to actually grasp how amazing the whole history is.
